80th anniversary of the Air Battle of Aljezur marked with book, conference and exhibition

Battle of Aljezur was an aerial combat between German and English aircraft, which took place on July 9, 1943

The launch of the 5th edition, revised and enlarged, of the book “The Battle of Aljezur – Facts and Stories of World War II”, a photographic and documentary exhibition about this battle, which marked 80 years yesterday, as well as a trip to the cemeteries of Aljezur and Sagres, to honor German and British aviators killed in combat.

These are the main activities planned for the 15th and 16th of July, in the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Aljezur, promoted by the Parish Council and by the Association for the Defense of the Historical and Archaeological Heritage of this town on the Costa Vicentina.

The Battle of Aljezur was an aerial combat between German and British aircraft, which took place on July 9, 1943. One of the aircraft, a German one, ended up crashing in the Ponta da Atalaia area, on the coast of Aljezur, with all its crew members dying. Their bodies have been buried in the Aljezur cemetery since 1943.

The launch of the 5th edition of the book “The Battle of Aljezur – Facts and Stories of World War II, by Âncora Editora, and whose author is José Augusto Rodrigues, will take place on Saturday, July 15, at 16 pm, in the hall of the Parish Council of Aljezur.

On the occasion, there will also be a conference on World War II, with dissertations by sea and war captain Augusto Alves Salgado and Carlos Guerreiro, journalist, blogger and writer, author of the book «Aterrem em Portugal».

Preceding the two dissertations, the photographic and documentary exhibition “The Battle of Aljezur took place 80 years ago” will be inaugurated, on display at the Parish Council of Aljezur.

On Sunday, the 16th, there will be a trip to the cemeteries of Aljezur and Sagres to honor German and British aviators killed in combat, followed by a visit to the farol of Cabo de S. Vicente.
