Sailing from the Algarve dominates the podium of the Portuguese Juniors and Absolute Championships in Cascais

Algarve had the second largest entourage in the race, among more than 150 participating sailors

Sailing teams from the Algarve achieved, last weekend, eight titles of champions of Portugal, one title of vice-champion, two third places, with 18 sailors integrating the Top10 in six classes of sailing in the Portuguese Championship Juniors and Absolute 2023, which took place in Cascais.

With the second largest entourage in the competition, among more than 150 participating sailors, the athletes from the Algarve entered the competition confident of a good result in view of the work carried out throughout the season.

During the three days of competition, organized by the Portuguese Sailing Federation and the Clube Naval de Cascais, the sailors from the Algarve were always well positioned in the top places, maintaining good consistency and a constant focus, managing to win in many of the eight races performed.

In the end, the satisfaction among the athletes and the respective technical structures, of the seven Algarve teams present – ​​Clube de Vela de Lagos, Clube Naval de Portimão, Clube Internacional da Marina de Vilamoura, Ginásio Clube Naval de Faro, Grupo Naval de Olhão, Clube Náutico de Tavira and the Associação Naval do Guadiana – it was evident and a source of great pride for the results obtained.

Another of the highlights of this Championship was the creation and manufacture of the perpetual trophy Martinho Fortunato, an Algarve citizen and sailor very connected to the sport, in particular the 420 class.

For Ricardo José, president of the Regional Sailing Association of the South (ARVSul), «these results clearly demonstrate the dynamics and work carried out by Algarve clubs that have highly specialized technical structures and are committed to developing sailing in the region».

«Despite all the difficulties in financially supporting the sport, these clubs have contributed significantly to promoting and developing the sport at national and international level», added the Algarve sailing manager.

João Pontes, despite currently being an athlete for the Clube Naval de Cascais, is from the Algarve and from the training schools of the Ginásio Clube Naval de Faro, became two-time champion of Portugal Absolute and 1st ranked.

In the IQFoil class, athlete Miguel Martinho, from Clube Naval de Portimão, ranked 3rd overall, Mick Dudek, athlete from Clube Naval de Portimão, was classified 3rd, followed by Clube de Vela de Lagos athlete, Eolann Hynes-Knight , in 4th place, both in ILCA 4.
