Olhão started to apply tourist tax

The tourist tax is paid per person and per night, up to a limit of five nights per stay

The Municipality of Olhão started this Monday, June 19, to apply a tourist tax that will be two euros, per night, in high season, and 1 euro from November to March.

The tourist tax is paid per person and per night, up to a limit of five nights per stay.

Children under 16 years of age, guests whose stay is motivated by medical treatment, extending to a companion, and guests with a disability equal to or greater than 60% are exempt from paying.

Hotel units must declare the number of overnight stays to the Municipality on a monthly basis, for subsequent issuance of the respective payment document.

According to the mayor, “the municipality intends to use 50% of the revenues with the new fee to minimize the effects of tourist pressure, namely in terms of cleanliness and increased security”.

«The tourist tax is a contribution that tourists leave in the territory to minimize their footprint», says António Pina.
