Albufeira proposes routes “Once upon a time there was a beach…” to discover geodiversity

Streamlined in partnership with the specialized company GeoWalks & Talks

The interpretive routes “Once upon a time there was a beach…” will take place in three areas of the coast of the municipality of Albufeira: Praia da Galé/Praia do Castelo, Praia dos Arrifes and Praia de Olhos d'Água, during the months of June, July and September, announced the Albufeira City Council.

Streamlined in partnership with the specialized company GeoWalks & Talks, these routes form part of the Environmental Education activities on the subject of geological diversity, which the Municipality of Albufeira organized for this summer, in compliance with the Blue Flag programme, which chose Geodiversity as its motto.

These interpretive walking trails serve to make known various aspects within the scope of the geodiversity of the places to be visited, namely the geological history recorded in the rocks and existing fossils and to understand the geological evidence found on the earth's surface, with a view to better understanding the current and future future challenges linked to climate change.

The activities start next Sunday, the 18th of June, with two interpretative walking routes, one at Praia de Olhos de Água, lasting two hours, over two kilometers, and another at Praia dos Arrifes, lasting three hours over three kilometers. Both start at 9:00 am.

The routes are accompanied by guides with specific training in geology and are classified as easy difficulty. Each activity has a maximum number of 15 participants, who must be at least 15 years old.

If you haven't signed up, there's still time. Ensure your participation by registering in advance (mandatory) by clicking here or accessing the form through the QR code available on the poster, sending it duly completed to the email: [email protected]

“Exploring the geodiversity of Praia dos Olhos de Água” is a route that gives participants a closer look at the freshwater “spotters” and the existing species in terms of rocks and fossils that are about 15 million years old, which can be found there. be found. These fossils are an integral part of geodiversity and an important testimony of the dynamics of our planet.

The route “Discovering the geodiversity of Praia dos Arrifes” runs along several trails in the vicinity of the beach. When arriving at Arrifes, the rocks that stand out from the sea stand out. A look at the cliff allows us to see several layers of rocks in a vertical position that remind us of books arranged on a shelf.
The first route is repeated on the 3rd of September and the second, a few days later, on the 10th of September.

On the 23rd of July and then on the 17th of September, the last route “Testimonies to changes in sea level in Albufeira” takes place, lasting three hours over five kilometres.

This is an interpretive route between Praia do Castelo and Praia da Galé. Hikers will discover the geodiversity of the site through the observation of fossils that indicate the paleoenvironments of about 15 million years ago, as well as abrasion platforms that testify to the relative position of the sea level in the last thousands of years. Meeting point at 9:00 am, at Praia do Castelo.
