Algarve farmers can apply for support against water loss in the sector

To use more efficient and monitorable irrigation technologies

The Algarve Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Fisheries (DRAP) informs that until the 15th of August the new Opening Notice for Tender No. 03/C09-I01.02/2023 – Private Irrigation is open, within the Algarve Regional Water Efficiency Plan, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).

This Notice, which covers the whole of the Algarve, aims to «implement measures that promote an increase in the level of protection of the environment by reducing water losses in the agricultural sector in existing agricultural plots, based on more efficient irrigation technologies and monitorable».

Applications are open to farms integrated in the Hydro-Agricultural Development of Alvor, under the management of the Association of Irrigants and Beneficiaries of Alvor, as well as those that use irrigation water from the following bodies of water: S. João da Venda – Quelfes; Chão de Barvada – Quinta João D'Ourém; Campina de Faro (Vale de Lobo Subsystem and Faro); Querença – Silves; Almádena – Odiáxere; Mexilhoeira Grande – Portimão; Albufeira – Ribeira de Quarteira; Ferragudo – Albufeira, Quarteira and finally Almancil – Medronhal.

Applications can also be submitted by anyone who is part of the hydro-agricultural developments of Groups III and IV and groundwater irrigation cooperatives, through the entities that manage them and the holdings of the members that make them up, as well as the agricultural holdings that use water for irrigation from the remaining bodies of water.

Natural or legal persons engaged in agricultural activities are considered eligible; collective entities responsible for the management of irrigation water distribution systems; and also collective candidacies, proposed by associations or organizations of farmers, intended for interventions on the plots of their members.

Only operations that fall under projects aimed at «investments to increase environmental protection to be carried out in private, individual and collective irrigation, in tangible and intangible assets, in agricultural companies linked to primary agricultural production, or in distribution systems will be eligible. of water and monitoring of consumption by irrigation cooperatives and associations of Beneficiaries of hydro-agricultural developments in Groups III and IV».

The total eligible cost per project must be equal to or greater than five thousand euros.

The following constitute eligible expenses within the scope of the application, and provided that they are exclusively intended to increase the protection of the environment in Private Regadios:

Material investments: i. Irrigation systems — installation or modernization of the supply and distribution network and the irrigation network and respective accessories for installing the drip system on the plot, including the necessary equipment for installing the irrigation head and monitoring systems and control of water consumption, as well as application software, aimed at the management and efficient use of water on the plot that increase the level of protection of the environment;

Immaterial investments: ii. General expenses — namely costs associated with preparing and monitoring the application. This type of expenditure is limited to a maximum of 5% of the eligible cost approved for material investments (point i). iii. Also eligible expenses are the costs associated with the study of the hydraulic properties of the soils of the plots to be intervened, as well as the design of the irrigation system and monitoring systems that increase the level of protection of the environment.

The deadline for submitting applications for this Notice runs from the 15th of June to 23:59 pm on the 15th of August (two months).
