Algae bring young scientists and professionals from around the world to the University of Algarve

Young Algaeneers Symposium starts tomorrow, May 9th

More than one hundred and a half young scientists and professionals from the seaweed sector from around the world will participate in the Young Algaeneers Symposium, which will take place from tomorrow, Tuesday, until May 11, at the Campus da Penha of the University of Algarve .

Over three days, "the latest advances in the most diverse areas of the seaweed sector will be discussed, such as: new foods, carbon capture, biorefinery, synthetic biology, prospecting and selection of strains and digitalization of biotechnological processes", according to the organization .

The symposium features presentations by experts in the sector, networking sessions and sharing testimonies by CEOs of Portuguese companies in the sector, namely Sparos, A4F and Algaplus.

Among the guests are Gao Fengzheng (ETH Zurich), João Varela (CCMAR), Anabela Raymundo (University of Lisbon), Hugo Pereira (GreenCoLab), Carlos Unamunzaga (EABA/Fitoplancton Marino), Luis Costa (A4F), Helena Abreu (ALGAplus), Jorge Dias (Sparos), Joao Navalho (Necton), Jean-Paul Cadoret (EABA/Algama), Antoinette Kazbar (Wageningen University).

 

 

«Participants will also present scientific posters with the latest work in the sector and organize themselves into working groups to discuss the different applications of this technology».

The event includes visits to Necton, «a company from Olhão specialized in the production of microalgae», to the Center for Marine Sciences of the University of Algarve, «a research and teaching organization focused on topics related to marine environments», and to GreenCoLab, « a collaborative platform based at the University of Algarve aimed at transferring knowledge of the seaweed sector between academia, industry and consumers».

The Young Algaeneers Symposium is an event « organized by and for young people with the support of EABA, the European Association of Algae Biomass, and that every year is hosted in a different European city, attracting participants from all over the world. In previous editions it has already visited Wageningen (Netherlands), Montpellier (France), Oban (UK) and Malta».

On the 11th of May, the event is open to the public and, in addition to the presentation of the results of the working groups, the best scientific poster presented during the symposium will also be elected, which will receive a basket of products based on algae, sponsored by Your Well.
