11th edition will take place from the 4th to the 7th of May

The Discoveries Festival is about to arrive in Lagos for its 11th edition, which will take place from the 4th to the 7th of May, in the historic center of the city, and will be dedicated to D. Sebastião and the 450th anniversary of Lagos becoming a city.

The last edition of the festival took place in 2019 and this year it starts on the 4th, at 14:30 pm, with the Historic Procession along Avenida dos Descobrimentos, involving the local school community, cultural associations and extras.

That moment marks the beginning of the festival, which includes the Feira Quinhentista, welcoming a record number of participants, including craftsmen, artisans, merchants and tavern keepers.

Throughout the enclosure there will also be several thematic poles that invite you to take a trip back in time and interact with our History - Exhibition of Weapons (Forte Ponta da Bandeira), Moorish Camp of Mulei Mohâmede Almotauaquil (Garden of the Constitution), Instruments of Torture ( Regimental Warehouse), Life aboard a Caravela (Caravela Boa Esperança), Games for Families (Garden of the Constitution), Remarkable Village (former Lagos Hospital) and Build a Caravela (exterior of Fort Ponta da Bandeira).

Animation will be constant throughout the venue and in the three performance centers – Palco da Muralha, Palco do Infante and Arco de S. Gonçalo – where there will be Christian and Arabic music, percussion, oriental dance, living statues, children's theater, puppets, staging , cavalry tournaments, fire shows, among others.

The highlight of the daily schedule will end up being the three great shows that are being prepared – KauDeDRAC (May 4th and 5th), A Ultima Nau (May 6th and 7th) and Dia de Aniversário d'El Rei (May 6th and 7th). de Maio), with magical moments of performing arts, light effects and pyrotechnics.

Being a free access event, one of the novelties of this edition consists of two paid experiences, but which reinforce the festival program and take participants to the times of the Discoveries and Renaissance – Navigator for a Day – Ride on the Nau Santa Bernarda (4th 7th of May) and Quinhentista Supper (7th of May, Messe Militar). Tickets for both initiatives are already on sale and can be purchased through website of the festival.

But the program does not stop there, with other activities taking place in cultural and museum facilities in Lagos over the course of these days, such as the Municipal Library, Forte Ponta da Bandeira, Slave Market and Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos.

Also noteworthy are the guided tours (with free registration also on the festival website) and the cycle of conferences that will take place on May 6 at the Cultural Center of Lagos, also dedicated to the young king and the 450th anniversary of the Elevation of Lagos to City , guaranteeing a scientific and pedagogical component that enriches the event.

In a note, the Lagos municipality warns that holding the event will imply traffic constraints, namely the closure of traffic between the D. João II roundabout and the Lagos Volunteer Fire Department from 13:30 pm to 16:30 pm on May 4th and at Praça do Infante between the 4th and 7th of May between 15:00 and 24:00.
