Escola Básica Ria Formosa and EB1 da Ferradeira promote color blindness screening

Objective is «to encourage the inclusion of all members of the school community, promoting Health and Well-being»

The João de Deus School Group is developing this Friday, April 21, an action to screen for color blindness and visual acuity, with the 3rd year students of Escola Básica Ria Formosa and EB1 da Ferradeira.

For the João de Deus Group, this is yet another way of «fostering the inclusion of all members of the school community, promoting Health and Well-being».

With the support of the Ciência Viva na Escola Project and the collaboration of ColorADD and MultiOpticas – Grandvision, the group intends to put into practice, for the first time in the Algarve region, an innovative project in the area of color blindness, which has been developed.

At the same time, the Group is including in its libraries a symbology to support the colorblind, “ColorADD, the Alphabet of Colors”, in the use of books in accordance with the Universal Decimal Classification.

In a note, this group from Faro reinforces that «color blindness is a disturbance of visual perception characterized by the inability to differentiate all or some colors, manifesting itself, many times, by the difficulty in distinguishing green from red»-.

“This disorder usually has a genetic origin, but it can also result from damage to the eyes or damage of a neurological origin. It is estimated that 8% to 10% of men and 0,5% of women, with European genetic ancestry, suffer from color blindness», he clarifies.
