The Algarve lost this year, for the first time, its status as the Portuguese region with the most blue flag beaches, after being overtaken by the North.
Thus, in 2023, there will be 85 beaches in the Algarve with a blue flag, one less than last year, since Beliche, in Sagres (Vila do Bispo), has left the list (see the complete list below).
In the North, 87 coastal and river beaches were distinguished, five more than in 2022.
As for the other regions, the Center has 47 (minus three), the Tagus has 76 (minus one), the Alentejo 39 (minus one), the Azores 44 (plus two) and Madeira 16 (same as last year).
In addition to the beaches, all four marinas in the Algarve once again receive the Blue Flag (Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira and Vilamoura).
Albufeira is once again the municipality in the region – and in the country – with the most blue flag beaches, 25 in total.
The list is followed by Vila do Bispo (and Loulé, both with 10 award-winning beaches, Portimão and Lagoa (with six beaches), Aljezur, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António (four beaches each), Lagos (three beaches), Castro Marim (three beaches) and Silves (two beaches).
Portimão once again has two award-winning Ecotourism Vessels (Sun Cat I – Algarve Sun Boat Trips and Sun Boat I – Algarve Sun Boat Trips).
At the national level, in 2022, 21 more beaches, two more marinas and nine more ecotourism boats will fly the Blue Flag than last year, in a total of 431 spaces.
Portugal has 432 Blue Flag beaches, marinas and vessels this year, one more than in 2022, despite a decrease in river beaches due to drought and fires, the Blue Flag Association of Europe announced this Thursday.
According to José Archer, president of the Blue Flag Association of Europe, in the next bathing season, 394 beaches will hoist the Blue Flag, spread over 103 municipalities, with Coruche and Montemor-o-Velho applying for beaches for the first time.
Regarding the advantages of visiting a distinguished beach, the person in charge recalled the four essential points for obtaining the award: quality of water and space (organization) security and services, surveillance and awareness of people (environmental education).
At an international level, Portugal ranks second in terms of award-winning ecotourism vessels, with 21, with 17 marinas having also been awarded.
