Boat stolen in Portimão caught off the coast of the Algarve, 4 men arrested

A high-speed vessel, with 67 jerricans of fuel, which had been stolen in Portimão, was seized and four men arrested, on suspicion of drug trafficking, in the early hours of this Friday, March 17, off the coast of the Algarve. 

The joint action involved the National Maritime Authority, the Portuguese Navy and the Air Force.

During this initiative, around 03:30 am, suspicious movements of a high-speed vessel were monitored, with four crew members on board, which was in international waters, suspected of being used in drug trafficking activities.

«An operation was carried out to approach the suspicious vessel, using a Maritime Police vessel and a Navy vessel, operated by Marines», say the authorities.

After the approach, it was found that it was a maritime-tourist vessel, which was stolen earlier this month, in the port of Portimão.

The vessel was seized, as well as a total of 67 fuel jerricans, with the four crew members who were on board being arrested, three men of Moroccan nationality and one of dual nationality (Spanish and Moroccan).

The vessel was then taken to the port of Portimão, as well as the four suspects.
