Portimão celebrates World Wetlands Day with environmental actions in Alvor

Removal of willows from beaches is one of the initiatives

The removal of willow from the dunes in the Ria de Alvor and other environmental activities are how Portimão will mark World Wetlands Day, which is celebrated today, February 2nd.

The first initiative will bring together tomorrow, February 3rd, 8th grade students from Escola Básica e Secundária da Bemposta, who will participate in the removal and control of weevils from beaches in the Alvor dune system.

«The action, which involves two classes from that educational establishment, has the support of the Portimão City Council and aims to raise awareness among young people for the protection of wetlands, highlighting the importance of these ecosystems for the existence of life on planet Earth», according to Portimão Town Hall.

«The beach weevil (Carpobrotus edulis) originates from South Africa and was introduced a few decades ago into the Alvor dune system, which is part of the Natura 2000 Network, for ornamental purposes and fixing slopes and dunes», according to autarchy.

“However, due to its high propagation and growth capacity, this exotic species has prevented the development and survival of native vegetation, forming continuous mats in some places, which must be regularly monitored and removed”, he added.

 

 

On Saturday, the 4th, at 15 pm, the environmental association A Rocha will carry out an awareness campaign for waste collection, entitled “Take your garbage with you”.

To this end, a panel on environmental education will be placed next to the pier at Praia de Alvor, with the lecture “Lixo nas Costaeiras” scheduled for 16:00.

Marcial Felgueiras (A Rocha), Ivo Carvalho (Parish Council of Alvor), Luís Brito (Teia d'Impulsos) and representatives of the Clube Naval D. João are expected at the meeting, which will take place at the Alvor Community Center and has free admission. II and the Alvor Fishermen's Association, moderated by Paula Banza.

This set of A Rocha initiatives has the collaboration of the Alvor Parish Council and the support of the Portimão City Council.
