“Lugar 54” is in Loulé and has drama, comedy and terror

The premiere of the series, which has the support of the Loulé Filme Office, will take place «in the first half of this year» on RTP Play

Space is always the same. It is in place 54 of an underground car park in Loulé that the stories take place, all different, but with this common link. The "innovative series", created by the Algarvean Bernardo Lopes and Francisco Mira Godinho, has "drama, comedy, terror", was recorded in Loulé and will debut in the first half of this year, on RTP Play.

With a background linked to cinema, Bernardo and Francisco felt they wanted something different.

«There was a joint desire to work in television, to find an opportunity in this market», explains Bernardo Lopes, when Sul Informação, at the presentation of the series that took place last week at Casa do Meio-Dia, in Loulé.

The idea, at the outset, was also “to do something different”.

«We thought of a series with things as specific as a single place, with few production requirements, but that could have a different language», he adds.

One of the call document RTP annual event, which the two filmmakers competed for, made the dream come true.

“We saw the opportunity to pierce in this television market. This is an innovative series at a national level – I believe it can be a milestone, a series that can compete with other American series in terms of production value and actors», says Bernardo Lopes.

“Lugar 54” is, above all, a series that does not follow a chronological line. Each episode tells «a different story», nothing like the previous one or the next one.

What's transversal is that all these stories take place in the same place in the same parking lot.

«We have drama, comedy, terror, crime», adds the young director.

For Francisco Mira Godinho, it was «a challenge to play in five different genres, in a way that makes sense».

But the series has, for the director, another charm that sets it apart.

«In all the episodes, we changed the actors and we were able to focus on what is also important: the quality of photography and sound», he considers.

In addition to shooting in the car park, the only exterior shots are also all shot in Loulé. For Bernardo Lopes, born in Quarteira, filming in his council «has another meaning».

«I don't remember seeing productions being made here and seeing this dynamic now... it's excellent», he confesses.

The premiere is already certain to take place «in the first half of this year», on RTP Play, a platform for streaming. Then there is the possibility that the series will also be shown on open-to-air television.

But, for Francisco Mira Godinho, this is not even the greatest victory.

"I think the biggest victory would be, the next time someone parks in a park, to stop and think: what could have happened here?".
