The lack of ambulances led a pre-hospital intervention physician (VMER) from Faro having to accompany the patient in a private car.
The situation was denounced by the Union of Pre-Hospital Emergency Technicians (STEPH), which explains that the occurrence took place around 18:00 pm this Friday, with only the Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER), having traveled to the location. with a doctor who, given the fact that «there were no ambulances available, took the transport in the patient's own car, driven by his wife», writes Diário de Notícias.
«There is a lack of ambulances everywhere, especially in Lisbon and in the Algarve, but what is unusual this time is that the doctor has gone in a car driven by a relative. If he did, it was because it was an urgent situation. But if, during transport, the patient has a cardiac arrest, there are no conditions [such as in an ambulance] for resuscitation», Rui Lázaro, president of STEPH, told Lusa.
“Unfortunately, it could be a scenario [the lack of ambulances] that could happen more often”, he estimated, stressing “the courage” of the VMER doctor in “assuming the risk of transport”.
