Student of the School of Hospitality and Tourism of the Algarve wins cooking competition

This is a competition aimed at students from the Turismo de Portugal school network.

He is only 19 years old, he was born and lives in Quarteira and studies at the School of Hospitality and Tourism in the Algarve. Filipe Santana was the winner in the Apprentice Cook category in the Interescolas Competition, which took place from the 22nd to the 24th of February at the Porto Hotel and Tourism School.

This is a competition aimed at students from the Turismo de Portugal school network, which this year also included the participation of students from the Instituto Médio Politécnico da Ilha de Moçambique.

Among 150 participants and 12 competition categories, the young student of Kitchen Management and Production, currently in the 2nd semester, stood out for the passion he showed in the three tests held.

In the individual practical test, based on a surprise basket, the Algarve student created the main course “Porquinho Escondido” – pork tenderloin on a bed of vegetables and potato foam.

The confection technique and creativity were decisive elements in the victory of Filipe Santana, who did not expect this result taking into account the competitive level of the contest.

«I had the opportunity to participate in this prestigious competition. I accepted it, dedicating all the love I have for the kitchen. I tried to overcome myself to make all those who are part of my professional path proud. Today I dedicate this victory to everyone», he said at the end.

Filipe Santana's passion for cooking has been there «always». He was only 14 years old when he decided to attend the level 4 course in Cooking and Pastry Techniques at the School of Hospitality and Tourism of the Algarve.

He fell in love with it so much that, after three years, he wanted to continue to deepen his knowledge in the area and advanced to the level 5 course in Management and Kitchen Production.

The award ceremony for the winners of the 12 categories ended yet another edition of the prestigious Interescolas contest and was attended by Nuno Fazenda, Secretary of State for Tourism.

With the victory in the Interescolas competition, the EHTA student will represent Portugal in the European Meetings of the European Association of Hotel and Tourism Schools (AEHT) that will take place this year in Vilnius, Lithuania, in November.
