Lagoa claims doctors for Ferragudo and Parchal and new Family Health Unit

President Luís Encarnação presented his demands to the Secretary of State for Health Promotion

The health extensions of Ferragudo and Parchal have long needed more General and Family Medicine doctors to respond to the needs of the population. The issue was presented by Luís Encarnação, mayor of Lagoa, to the Secretary of State for Health Promotion, who, on Monday, visited the municipality, within the scope of the “Open Health” initiative.

The mayor took advantage of the visit of Secretary of State Margarida Tavares to "demonstrate all the constraints that the municipality has in the area of health and claim more doctors for the health extensions of Ferragudo and Parchal".

Luís Encarnação also claimed the creation of another Family Health Unit (USF) in the municipality, to respond to the population residing in the territory of the Union of Parishes of Estômbar and Parchal and the Parish of Ferragudo, continuing the existing USF to respond to the population of Porches, Lagoa and Carvoeiro.

The Municipality of Lagoa, in a press release, says that it has considered «for a long time that, despite the enormous effort of doctors, nurses and health assistants, the creation of another USF is fundamental for the promotion of quality health care, more quickly and homogeneously throughout the county».

More than claiming, the Câmara de Lagoa showed itself to be «available to be part of the solution, making itself available to carry out the necessary works to increase the health extension of Parchal to welcome the new USF».

«It is important that we intervene, as soon as possible, in the facilities of the Lagoa Health Center and its extensions, because many of these buildings have never had a single intervention. However, it does not solve the county's health problems. We need more doctors to respond to the needs of the population», said Luís Encarnação.

The visit of the Secretary of State for Health Promotion took place last Monday, which was accompanied by Josélia Gonçalves, member of the Algarve Health Administration, Josélia Gonçalves, by the president and vice-president of the Chamber of Lagoa (Anabela Simão) , who is also responsible for health, other members of the municipal executive and technicians from the municipality and the local Health Centre.

The delegation visited the Lagoa Health Centre, the Lagoa Family Health Unit and the Community Palliative Care Support Team.
