IPMA inaugurates its new supercomputing system

The new system is funded by the C10 – Sea component of the Recovery and Resilience Plan

The new Ocean Atmosphere Modeling System with High Spatial and Temporal Resolution – “Atlântico” will be inaugurated on Friday, the 20th, by the Minister of Economy and the Sea and the Secretary of State for the Sea.

This system, financed by the PRR, already allows IPMA's computational capacity to be multiplied by 20, significantly improving the forecast quality of the models used to issue meteorological warnings, forecasts for maritime meteorology, support for aeronautical meteorology, in meteorological fire risk indices as well as in many other sectors.

The new system financed by the C10 – Sea component of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), involving an investment of more than one million euros, will make it possible to increase IPMA’s computational capacity by more than 20 times, with a focus on the Ocean Modeling System -Atmosphere, with high spatial and temporal resolution.

The supercomputing system designed with the latest technologies will increase the resolution of numerical weather forecast models, their execution speed and the geographic area covered.

It will allow better integration with global models, both with regard to the sea and with regard to the atmosphere, and will benefit from the increased coverage allowed by the new sensors and systems, enabling the expansion of the operational geographical domain that will now encompass mainland Portugal , adjacent Atlantic area and Madeira Archipelago, which represents the Atlantic area of national responsibility.

The impact will be immediate, with benefits in improving the forecast quality of the models used to issue meteorological warnings, forecasts for maritime meteorology, support for aeronautical meteorology, meteorological indices of fire risk or in many other sectors of activity. socio-economic, increasing capacity to safeguard lives and goods, essential in a scenario of climate change, as well as facilitating national participation in the development of the digital twins of the Earth system.

IPMA is the national authority in the fields of meteorology, climate, seismology and geomagnetism, being responsible for the set of investments that make up the Polo Oeiras Mar do Hub Azul – Infrastructure Network for the Blue Economy.
