The “Al-Buhera” tile panel, by the artist Célia Mendes and which celebrates the county's history, heritage and culture, was installed in December in the Rossio area of this city.
This work of art «of large dimensions, measuring approximately 13×1,80 m and a total of 901 tiles, in the Rossio area, «reproduces the flight of a seagull over “Al-Buhera” (the Sea Castle), observing the most striking aspects of the city», according to the Chamber.
Among the elements represented are «the beautiful bay of Albufeira, where the boats used to collect endogenous products from the county (figs, almonds and carob)», Praia dos Pescadores «with fishermen working their fishing gear» and the «ancestral art of milling, with the windmill on Cerro do Malpique, where the seeds are crushed to make flour».
The parapets, the patterned tiles of Albufeira, the houses in the old town, Praia do Peneco, the pediment of the Church of Sant`Ana and the typical houses in the Rossio area are also represented.
«The landscape, culture and heritage of Albufeira are differentiating elements of the municipality's tourist offer that must be preserved and valued. This is one of the many ways of doing it, perpetuating the memory and experience of other times, transmitting it to current and future generations of Albufeira residents, not forgetting the countless tourists who visit the region», underlines José Carlos Rolo, president of the Albufeira Chamber.
Ricardo Clemente, councilor in charge of Exterior Spaces and Requalification, underlines that the objective of the intervention is «to enhance the public space, embellishing it with elements that make reference to the history and culture of our people».
The councilor also highlights that the executive is committed to making the public space «more attractive, without losing the cultural and historical memory that must be present in each element portrayed», work that is being carried out «by a vast team of technicians of the municipality using artists from the region».
