Thousands of bream bred at EPPO released into the sea and Ria Formosa

Fish raised at the Pilot Fish Farming Station in Olhão

Thousands of specimens of sea bream, produced in aquaculture, were released in November by a group of researchers from the Pilot Fish Farming Station of Olhão (EPPO) of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA). The aim is to «repopulate and increase existing stocks in Ria Formosa».

The initiative was scheduled for «a period that precedes the cooling of the waters of our coast, characteristic of the approaching winter period», explains the IPMA.

Once again, like other actions carried out before, the release had the close collaboration of the company Tunipex, which provided logistical support, land and sea transport of the fish.

The researchers explained that, in this action, “600 specimens of white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) and 1800 of sea bream (diplodus cervinus) of approximately 50 grams, next to the artificial reef systems in the Armona APPA area (Aquaculture Production Pilot Area).

It is an area with restrictions on navigation, "so it presents perfect conditions for the adaptation of individuals and their integration in the natural recruitment of species", adds the IPMA.

At the same time, another 1300 individuals (1000 white seabream; 300 white seabream) were released in the interior of the Ria Formosa.
