Charolas welcome 2023 in Castro Marim

The initiative is promoted by the project “Castro Marim (COM) Vida”, from the association Odiana

The tradition of charolas – the so-called «janeiras à algarvia» – returns on January 1st to three towns in Castro Marim: Furnazinhas, Alta Mora and Monte Francisco.

The initiative is promoted by the “Castro Marim (COM) Vida” project, by the Odiana association.

«The objective is to preserve this oral tradition, one of the richest domains of the Portuguese Popular Songbook and still with great expressiveness in the Algarve», explains Odiana.

The song of the janeiras, in charge of the Grupo de Charolas dos Machados, starts in Furnazinhas, at 15:00 in the Espaço Multiuso. At 16:15h it continues on to the town of Alta Mora, with a stop at the headquarters of the ARCDAA. The last stop is in the town of Monte Francisco at 17:15 pm, at the Clube Recreativo Campesino. The aim is to promote conviviality, value popular traditions and combat loneliness among the elderly.

This is an initiative of the CLDS 4G project «Castro Marim (COM)Vida», which comes within the scope of activity 7 «Senior Informed and Safe», promoted by the Municipality of Castro Marim and coordinated by the Odiana association, co-financed by CRESC Algarve 2020, Portugal 2020 and the European Union, through the European Social Fund.
