Aqua de Portimão launches limited edition cans of sardines with a hundred-year-old recipe

Shopping center was inspired by the tradition of the old Boavista Factory

The launch of a limited edition of 2500 cans of canned sardines, «made in an artisanal way and packed by hand, following a recipe with 100 years of history», is the starting point of the “Sabe a Mar” project, which the shopping center Aqua Portimão is promoting, with the support of the Municipality and the Museum of Portimão.

The “Sabe a Mar” canned sardines are available in two options, lemon and virgin olive oil, and cost 5 euros per unit. Part of the proceeds from its sale will benefit the Memórias com Sentido(s) project of the Alzheimer Portugal association.

With this initiative, the commercial space in Portimão wants to “pay homage to the city of Portimão and its people, roots and culture, but also to this whole region that lives from the love of the sea”.
«We are ambitious and have launched a large-scale project, throughout which we will pay gastronomic, artistic and cultural tributes, valuing partners, talent and local entities», according to Marta Costa, responsible for the project.

Basically, this initiative refers to the fact that this shopping center by the multinational Klépierre was built in the same place where the Boavista Factory stood 100 years ago.

The «history and memories» of this space were the motto of the new Algarve shopping center project and inspired the two products that have now been launched, «which will be explored in various cultural, culinary and digital initiatives», according to Aqua Portimão.

«We started with a limited and numbered edition of a product typically from the region – canned sardines with a century-old recipe – to bring the taste of this sea and tradition to all Portuguese people», summarizes Marta Costa.

These preserves, «which recover and preserve decades of tradition, were produced manually and with the same century-old recipe used at Fábrica Boavista, prepared with dedication by the men of the sea, by the Conserveira do Arade and Klépierre teams».

The project also involves chef Hugo Nascimento, who will «create exclusive recipes that highlight the flavor of sardines and that will be made available soon on the initiative's website.

The promotion of this new product will be carried out with the help of comedian David Cristina, «who will travel around Portimão to talk to the most charismatic characters and discover the most characteristic local expressions of the region's identity», material that will be used in a digital section.

The “Sabe a Mar” project will run for three years, «during which it will explore the different axes from art and culture to gastronomy».
