Lagos: Painting competition challenges to give «contemporary vision» of D. Sebastião

Within the framework of the 450 years of elevation to city

Lagos is challenging the artistic community to participate in the painting competition “Dom Sebastião na História de Lagos”, with works that give «a contemporary vision of this unique figure and the mystery that surrounds him».

This is one of the initiatives with which the Câmara de Lagos is celebrating the 450th anniversary of its elevation to the status of city, «a title awarded to the then Vila Notável by the young monarch on the 27th of January 1573, who also established the Governor’s residence here. of the Kingdom of the Algarve".

«After four and a half centuries, the municipality intends to evoke this succession of historical events, arouse the community's curiosity regarding the figures that marked that time, as well as reflect on the myth of Sebastianism».

The painting contest “D. Sebastião in the History of Lagos” aims to stimulate creation, challenging the artistic community to present works that go beyond the physical representation of D. Sebastião.

The project is open to artists aged 18 or over who develop their activity in the national territory. Registration will take place from the 19th to the 23rd of December, with an application being mandatory. A jury will select the works destined to integrate the exhibition and will distinguish the works to be awarded.

The exhibition will open on the 27th of January 2023 and will be on display at the Centro Cultural de Lagos until the 6th of May.
