The 17th Sports Gala in Albufeira took place last Friday, October 28, with eyes set on the candidacy for European City of Sport in 2026.
The initiative brought together about 1000 people who attended the recognition, by the Municipality, of about 300 athletes who, in the 2021-2022 season, added titles and medals.
This year's Sports Gala is marked by Albufeira's bet on the European City of Sports 2026, with the mayor José Carlos Rolo stressing that "sport is a manifestation of peace and harmony, uniting people throughout history".
«We will continue to support sport, either through the continuity of program contracts, or through the continuity of events such as the Cross das Amendoeiras, World Fishing Championships, in which, in Boarded fishing, we have the world champion, Alexandre Dionísio, Volta ao Algarve by Bike and much more», guaranteed the mayor of Albufeira.
Vice-President Cristiano Cabrita highlighted the importance of the family in Sports, the sports structures available to citizens and suitable for world events and the high number of federated athletes in the municipality: «there are more than three thousand federated athletes who in this municipality value a Sport seriously, ethically and for the benefit of a community, so we have everything necessary to be European City of Sport 2026 and I believe we will be”.
The initiative was also attended by Custódio Moreno, regional director of the Portuguese Institute for Sports and Youth.
