«Dark relationship between gender and migration» explored in show premiered in Loulé

Theater play will also be presented in Lagoa, Faro and Lisbon

The «difficult and obscure relationship between gender and migration» will be explored in the play “Samotracias”, by Carolina Santos, which will have its world premiere on October 21, at Cineteatro Louletano, in Loulé, at 21 pm.

The latest production by Mákina de Cena is based on the book Les Samothraces, by Nicole Caligaris, and includes «testimonies of migrant women residing in the Algarve region», which «composes an intimate mosaic of dreams broken across borders», according to the theater company from Loulé.

After the premiere in Loulé, the show can be seen in Lagoa (October 23, at 17:00, in the Carlos do Carmo Auditorium), and in Faro (October 28 and 29, at 21:00 pm, at the regional directorate of the IPDJ). On the 12th and 13th of November the play will be presented at the Teatro Ibérico, in Lisbon.

In the play, “Pepita, Sandra and Sissi, three women from different generations, nationalities and languages — Portuguese, Spanish and French — express the same desire: to leave”.

“Given the ambition or the urgency of escape, the fates of a young woman who seeks fame abroad, a widowed mother who refuses a forced marriage and a lady who, after decades of servitude, seek a different end to her life intersect. your life. Crushed by the hope of another future, however, they witness the fading of their dreams on a cruel journey», describes Mákina de Cena.

As for the name of the piece, it is inspired by the white marble sculpture devoted to the goddess of Victory, discovered in 1863 on the island of Samothrace.

This is the goddess who, “according to Greek mythology, is sent by Zeus to announce triumph and glory to the victors on the battlefields. The statue, discovered in pieces and without a head, is now on display in the Louvre Museum.

«In 2022, who embodies this figure? Who is — or who are — the representation of a fragmented, broken and faceless victory?», asks the theater company.

«Aware of the inequalities and gender violence that never fail to accompany the experiences of migrant women — often, even in an expanded form — “Samotracias” proposes a commitment to these reflections both on stage and in their artistic creation processes» , adds.

The play privileges «a model of collective and socially involved work» and, therefore, «incorporates listening to and sharing the stories of migrant women residing in various municipalities in the Algarve».

Following the same philosophy, presentations are also planned for schools in the cities of Loulé, Lagoa and Faro.

From Les Samothraces, published in 2000 by the French writer Nicole Caligaris, the tragedy of those who continue to walk without direction, home or luck has multiplied: “Moria happened, a global pandemic happened, [...] be taboo", says Carolina Santos, who still remembers the wars in Afghanistan and, now, the invasion of Ukraine, "which forced and forces hundreds of thousands of women to leave their land, and part of their identities, with their children and families».

“Samotracias” is a co-production by Mákina de Cena and Fondación Teatro Libre De Bogotá (Portugal, Colombia and Chile), with funding from the Municipality of Loulé and the structure Iberescena – Fund for aid for the Ibero-American performing arts, and support by First Round — Int.
