Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen Literary Contest is back

A joint initiative of the municipal libraries of Lagos and Loulé

The Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen Literary Contest, a joint initiative of the municipal libraries of Lagos and Loulé, is back.

The initiative, which already has 17 editions, aims to celebrate the iconic author Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen at the same time as it wants to stimulate the creativity of young people from the Algarve.

Students interested in entering this challenge have until February 18 to submit their writing and illustration works inspired by the writer's work.

«This contest is already part of the Algarve school tradition, promoting reading among its students, but also encouraging the exploration of their imagination and creativity, taking into account the vast work of one of the greatest figures of Portuguese culture and literature, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen», says the Câmara de Lagos in a note sent to the newsrooms.

The initiative is aimed at all students in the 2nd and 3rd cycles of Basic Education and Secondary Education (or equivalent) in schools in the Algarve.

The competition modalities are Writing (poetry, prose or essay in Portuguese), and Illustration, and the works must be inspired by the author's works and indicate which one or which they are reflected. Entries, individual or groups with a maximum of three elements, must be presented with a pseudonym and year of schooling and must be delivered by 18 February (inclusive) at the Lagos Municipal Library or Loulé Municipal Library, in person or by mail.

In this edition, the awards ceremony will take place in Lagos, on April 22, 2023, taking advantage of the celebration of World Book Day, the very next day. Prize-winning students will be given gift cards to be redeemed at local bookstores in Lagos or Loulé (four prizes at each level of schooling, two per category).
