Albufeira promotes workshop on “Cane and its Utilities”

The objective is to contribute to the sustainability of the territory and to a new awareness of the landscape

Albufeira will promote the workshop on “Cane and its Utilities”, whose main objective is to contribute to the sustainability of the territory and to a new awareness of the landscape, on the 29th.

The workshop is part of the Biennium Program for Climate Action of Portuguese Geoparks 2022/23 aimed at promoting activities that contribute through education, tourism and community development, to the sustainability of these territories. The action will thus be promoted by the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis, in partnership with the Municipality of Albufeira, which promotes this action, at the Cerro d'Ouro Educational Center, in Paderne.

The initiative is scheduled for Saturday, October 29, from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm, and its main objective is «the dissemination of the usefulness of sugarcane, including reeds and basketry, in order to increase demand and interest in it, promoting a greater collection and cleaning of the cane fields, next to the riverside areas», says the municipality in a note.

The Albufeira City Council also recalls that the expansion of “Arundo donax” cane fields, a resistant and persistent invasive species, deserves our attention, «especially in riverside areas, not only due to the effect of obstructing their beds, but also, because flanking the banks of streams, they occupy the space of native riparian species, posing a threat to vegetation and these ecosystems».

The registration period runs until the 26th of October and must be done via email [email protected] or by phone 289 368 241. “

“Cane and its Utilities” is a free initiative limited to 20 participants.
