European Mobility Week passes through Portimão and Alvor again

Initiatives take place between the 18th and 22nd of September

The Municipality of Portimão once again joins the European Mobility Week, this year with the motto “Better Connections”, and has prepared for the period between the 18th and 22nd of this month a set of initiatives that include the presentation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of Portimão (PMUS) and the “Alvor without cars” initiative.

The presentation of the PMUS is scheduled for September 22, at 18:00, which will take place in the Portimão Arena auditorium, by engineer Paula Teles, CEO Mobilidade e Planeamento do Território, an external consulting company that supported the development of this strategic document. and operational, which is in a development phase, very close to the final version.

«The main objective of the plan is to serve as an instrument of action and awareness, in order to promote the articulation between the different platforms of travel and modes of transport, with a view to implementing an integrated mobility system, in a rational way», he says. the municipality in note.

With a cost of investment and sustainable operation, the plan enshrines the reduction in the use of individual transport and, at the same time, the adequate mobility of citizens, residents or visitors, also promoting social inclusion, competitiveness, quality of urban life and preservation of historical, built and environmental heritage.

One of the highlights of the European Mobility Week will again be the “Alvor without cars” initiative, which the local Parish Council has scheduled for September 18, with recreational, cultural and sporting activities, in order to take the population and tourists to discover the center of the village, free of car circulation.

In partnership with the Municipality of Portimão, on that day, car traffic will be prohibited from 11:00 am to 19:00 pm in the center of Alvor, except for residents who leave the area with their vehicles and must return after the scheduled time, or for emergency vehicles and security forces, public and alternative transport, transport of perishable products and vehicles for people with reduced mobility.

 

Throughout that day, the arts and crafts of yore will also be presented at the doors of houses on Rua Marquês de Pombal, with demonstrations of palm works, from 15:00 to 17:00, and handicraft stalls, between 11:00 and 19:00, with It is still possible to enjoy live painting on Rua António José de Almeida.

The proposals for this Sunday do not stop here and include the baptism of canoeing in the Ria de Alvor with the technical accompaniment of a monitor, from 9:00 am to 13:00 pm, organized by Clube Naval D. João II, as well as a OneWheel demonstration, which between 14:30 pm and 18:30 pm invites you to a different transport experience, perfect for abroad, on the initiative of the company Onewheel from Portugal.

From 9:30 am, the Alvor Sports Complex will host a workshop on the maintenance of touring bicycles, promoted by the Tic Tac Bike Tour, with a lot of sports entertainment, which includes modalities such as karate, judo, dance and zumba, among others, taking place on Rua Dr. Afonso Costa, at Praça da República and Rua 25 de Abril, from 11 am to 00 pm and between 12 pm and 30 pm.

Also part of the program is a morning walk along the riverside along the walkways of Alvor, contemplating the fauna and flora, whose meeting point will be the Alvor Complex, from where hikers will depart around 9:00 am, and a sunset walk along the Alvor Biodiversity Station, starting at 17:30 pm from Jardim D. João II.

On the 18th, there are also paid tours in Portimão on a solar boat “Pelas da História do Arade”, which cost €7,5 per adult, while children up to 10 years old pay half of this amount.

The embarkation place will be the south pier of Clube Naval de Portimão and the tours start at 10:00 am, 11:30 am, 15:00 pm and 16:30 pm, with the vessel having a capacity for eight people.

For the 21st, the suggestion is an afternoon walk “By the tide” along natural heritage trails in the parish of Alvor, with an appointment next to the town's Sports Complex, at 18:30 pm.

The night of the 22nd of September will be dedicated to a historical-cultural pedestrian tour through the urban landscapes of Portimão, in an initiative by Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes, whose departure is scheduled for 20:30 pm next to the bandstand located in the riverside area of ​​the city. prior registration, limited to 12 participants, by calling 282 480 492.
