Nine liters of cigarette butts collected on Tavira beach contribute to circular economy

“Caça à Beata” brought together 152 volunteers

The “Caça à Beata” initiative led 152 volunteers to collect nine liters of cigarette butts and other waste between the 22nd and 25th of August on the beaches of the municipality of Tavira (Cabanas, Ilha de Tavira, Terra Estreita and Barril).

«The playful-environmental action aims to raise awareness of the issue of small waste abandoned by holidaymakers during the bathing season, as well as rewarding those who collaborate in preventing the environment», says the Tavira City Council in a note.

Now, the butts found on the beach will be sent to the Biataki network, within the framework of the biataCircular research project, which aims to decontaminate and revalue the butts, through the cultivation of mushrooms (Oyster mycelium), resulting in waterproof “eco-bricks”, fire resistant and with low weight, in a perspective of Circular Economy and waste recovery.

“Caça à Beata” comes within the scope of the commitments made with the Blue Flag Association of Europe in terms of environmental education.

In this sense, the Municipality of Tavira, in collaboration with the Municipal Company Taviraverde, promoted this action which had the support of concessionaires, maritime-tourist transport, river and tourist transport companies.
