Centenary of Laura Ayres counts with Annual Public Health “Lecture” at UAlg

The Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Algarve created a Litterature Annual dedicated to Public Health, as part of the celebrations of the centenary of Laura Ayres.

The first Litterature is scheduled for September 30, at 11:00 am, in a joint organization of the UAlg and the Loulé City Council, and will be delivered by Henrique Barros, president of the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto.

The lecture intends to pay tribute to the researcher and professor of Public Health, Laura Ayres, from Loulé, “which will make it possible to value and disseminate the work and research that is currently being developed in this area”, says the municipality in a note.

This activity, which takes place at the Green Amphitheater, on the Gambelas Campus, is aimed at the entire academic community, students and alumni, the medical community and the general public.

This will be the inaugural year but, according to the Loulé Chamber, it is intended that this Lecture will take place annually, becoming an event of the Algarve academy.

The celebrations for the centenary of Laura Ayres started on the 1st of June and will last until May 2023.

In addition to this initiative, a seminar is also planned in Loulé, in the technical-scientific area of ​​health, health promotion and education actions, focusing on the area of ​​affections and education for sexuality, or the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science are some of the initiatives still planned under this commemorative programme.

Laura Guilhermina Martins Ayres was born in Loulé, in the parish of São Sebastião, on June 1, 1922, graduating in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon in 1946, starting a long and prestigious career, as a virologist, epidemiologist and professor of Health. public.

Public and institutional recognition earned him the award, by the Portuguese State, of the Officer Insignia, in 1990, and Grand Officer of the Military Order of Sant'Iago da Espada, in 1992.
