Salina's Journey

This loggerhead turtle was rescued in June 2021 by fisherman Ricardo Gonçalves, who delivered it to Porto d'Abrigo do Zoomarine. When he arrived in that space, the turtle was “very anemic, had a hook stuck in the entrance of the stomach and presented a high risk of developing aspiration pneumonia”.

However, on the 20th of July, the turtle “received a second chance at life when, in cooperation between the Zoomarine team of specialists and the Portuguese Navy (Southern Maritime Department), it was returned to the sea about 20 kilometers to the south. in Faro».

«If conditions are maintained, Salina (which, over the years, may even prove to be 'the Salino'…) should continue on its path, indifferent to the contribution it is making to science – and that is how it should be, to respect their well-being and their return to a peaceful life, honoring the biology of the species (living for decades, reproducing annually, and never interbreeding with humans again)», emphasizes Zoomarine.
