Sagres: ISMAT students and professors think about how to regenerate the Port of Baleeira

Through nature-based solutions

The teachers and students of the Master of Design for the Circular Economy at ISMAT – Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes, developed the pilot project “Regenerating the Port of Baleeira through Nature-Based Solutions”, in collaboration with the Municipality of Vila do Bispo .

According to the municipality, “this was an applied participatory project that took place between the 23rd of June and the 7th of July, at the premises of the Lota de Sagres Interpretation Center, in Porto da Baleeira, with the aim of reflecting on possible territorial regeneration solutions, through proposals developed with citizens, focusing on innovative, material and immaterial dimensions, with a view to establishing more effective and affective relationships between Porto da Baleeira and Vila de Sagres».

The workshops had the participation of active citizens of the local community, local entrepreneurs, representatives of the Fishing Shipowners Association of Sagres and Docapesca – Portos e Lotas, mayors and technical managers of the municipality.

The results of the co-creative process were presented, on the 7th of July, to all the participants in the project, «making it clear that both the key points and the proposed solutions based on Nature are fundamental for local development», adds the Chamber.

The processes developed make it possible to «activate a sense of participatory citizenship and social co-responsibility for the construction of more sustainable, circular and community-oriented territories, actively contributing to the safeguard, conservation and enhancement of the natural and cultural heritage of the intervened area».

For all these reasons, points out the Municipality of Vila do Bispo, «the students and teachers of the Master in Design for the Circular Economy at ISMAT are to be congratulated for the results achieved, having highlighted the importance of acquiring new concepts and practices for the development of the territory, new business areas and the regeneration of linear economic processes in circular models».

The Municipality of Vila do Bispo reinforces the «importance of cooperation with regional Higher Education Institutions as a formula to leverage projects that promote the sustainable development of its territory, contributing to the academic training of the students involved and to their future professional achievement».
