Penina will be at a party with music, walks and even a “Hotel for insects”

There is a lot to choose from

The village of Penina will be celebrating for two days, with a program full of cultural, artistic, sports and environmental activities, this Saturday and Sunday, 9th and 10th of July. 

On the 9th, Saturday, at 9:00 am, the meeting point will be at Largo da Fonte da Penina and from here several walks will depart: “A volta das Noras da Penina”, led by Vítor Gregório, the “Rocha da Pena Norte Quinta do Freixo – Explanation of the plants”, by Alex Morgan from Nature-walks, which includes the offer of a set of sweets and tasting of products from Quinta do Freixo.

At 10:00 am, there will be a small garbage collection awareness walk by Run-Eco, led by Carla Narciso.

Also at 9:00 am the workshop program starts, where the participant can learn to “Work the Palm”, with Alice Ramos, and visit her mini museum.

At 10:00 am, artist Manoli Ortiz will create a “Hotel for insects”, in her atelier, while at 10:30 am, artisan Sofia Mendes will teach how to make a “lip balm”, at Saboaria da Aldeia.

In the most famous oven in the village, there will be a demonstration of “How to make bread in a wood oven”, by Renato George Marques, starting at 10:00.

Another moment of this program will be the baptism and demonstration of the craft beer – Salamandra Penina – produced with Bela Luz thyme (an indigenous plant of Rocha da Pena), by Nova Vida, starting at 15:00.

At 16:00 pm, another demonstration will take place at Saboaria da Aldeia, “Extraction of essential oils”, by Sofia Mendes, while, at 16:30 pm and 19:30 pm, adrenaline rises with the Workshop “Climbing in Top-Rope”, by David Rodrigues.

Various exhibitions scattered throughout the village will feed the spirit of discovering the village.

On the way to Manoli Ortiz's studio, there are several artists who will exhibit their works, from photography to sculpture, from painting to artistic installations, with names such as Charlie Holt, Gladys Farias, Neuza Barbosa, Toin Adams, Yolanda Relinque and Manoli Ortiz.

The community made available several tools used in the field work to make known its name and usefulness “Words with objects from Algarve agriculture”.

At 18:00, the streets of the village will be invaded by the dance group Fusion Contemporary Dance. Ana Machado, in Largo da Fonte, will tell stories about the oral heritage of the Algarve. After tasting some delicacies prepared by the Associação de Benafim, the party continues into the night with several concerts:

At 21:00, there will be “Carpideira”, with Helena Madeira on the harp and Ricardo Martins on the Portuguese guitar, followed, at 22:00, “Gondwana Algarvensis”, by José João Cabrita, João Caiano and João Melro with projection of images by Manoli Ortiz, and, at 23 pm, “The Kangaroos Trio”, by Marc Policarpo voice and guitar Paulo Carvalho bass and Rúben Salamanca voices on drums and vocals.

The 10th, Sunday, dawns with the Salamandra Trail walk, with three 7km, 14km and 23km routes (registration at www.acorrer.pt).

Sofiya Simoty will warm up the hikers at Largo da Fonte, and several activities are planned for the little ones. At 11:30 am, the scheduled time for the arrival of the athletes, there will be a Didgetomm concert by Tomas Caro Alvite, coming from Santiago de Compostela, with his didgeridoo and handpan.

To top it off, the party ends with the Salamander Trail Walk Awards.

This initiative has the support of the Portuguese Association of Didgeridoo and the support of the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis Loulé-Silves-Albufeira and the Union of Parishes Querença, Tôr and Benafim.
