Loulé lives “Nights with Heritage” at the Islamic Baths

Activity is free

Saturday nights in Loulé, during July and August, are “with the Heritage”. The museum space of the Islamic Baths and the Barreto Manor House will be open from 10:00 am to 23:00 pm, with thematic guided tours at 21:30 pm.

On each visit, a topic will be dealt with in the scope of local history, museography, archeology or conservation and restoration.

This Saturday, the 16th, the theme will be “The Manor House of Barreto: architecture of a noble house” and the visit will be guided by Ricardo Louro, senior technician of Cultural Heritage.

At this point, the architecture of a noble house, the Barreto Family House, will be discussed.

The most recent investigation suggests that it was on the land where the Islamic Baths of Loulé were located that a manor building would be born, mentioned in the royal document of 1462, signed by D. Afonso V, authorizing Gonçalo Nunes Barreto to build a house in Loulé .

After this date, the construction of the manor house began, which had two construction phases, the first with Gonçalo Nunes Barreto, which corresponds to the southern colonnade, and the second, after his death, which corresponds to the northern colonnade.

One of the capitals of the northern colonnade bears the coat of arms of the Melo family, which is explained by the marriage union between the two families, as the son of Gonçalo Nunes Barreto married Leonor de Melo.

The Barreto family probably kept the house until the 1640th century. XVII, when this family retires to Spain following the Restoration of independence in XNUMX.

The recently opened museum space presents the musealization of the Islamic Baths of Loulé building, which is expected to be classified as a National Monument, as well as the ruins of the aforementioned manor house.
