Food Bank's Portimão Hub celebrates 10 years of existence

Efeméride integrates the program of the Week to Combat Food Waste, which runs until 8 June

The Portimão branch of Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome celebrates its decade of existence this year, and, to mark the occasion, the refurbishment works of the warehouse located in the industrial area of Coca Maravilhas took place.

The festivities are part of the program of the Week to Combat Food Waste, which runs until the 8th of June, and also included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, in the presence of councilor João Gamboa on behalf of the Municipality of Portimão.

On the occasion, Nuno Alves, president of Banco Alimentar do Algarve, received the keys to the new electric vehicle that will now be at the service of the local nucleus.

«I must especially thank the work that the Câmara de Portimão has done through its unsurpassed team, which has accompanied us along this path and throws us challenges that we seek to follow as far as possible», said the official.

At the time, João Gamboa also highlighted the social relevance of the Food Bank, stating that «there are no words to describe all the work at the service of society, whether in terms of fighting hunger and food waste, or encouraging volunteering».

The councilor also stressed the happiness of «counting in Portimão with a series of social action institutions, with which we have created a culture of teamwork and coordination, which allows us to be able to react quickly when something happens».

"We will always be available to contribute with whatever is necessary, because in our area of activity there should never be red lines or limits that stop any type of help for the community", said the mayor.

Over the last decade, the Portimão operational base, which serves the entire Barlavento area, from Vila do Bispo to Albufeira, «distributed a total of 8,4 million kilos of foodstuffs to the needy in this sub-region, equivalent to 9,1 million euros", says the Portimão City Council in a statement.
