The Jardim da Alameda João de Deus, one of the most visited places and where “memories have been created” for decades, in Faro, was reopened to the public this Thursday after a year and a half in requalification.

The iconic Farense park was reopened after a year and a half of requalification work (six months more than planned) and an investment of one million euros to welcome the public again, whether those who want to enjoy the space or those who are just passing through.

Hundreds of people, including children and adults, spent yesterday morning enjoying the entertainment, activities, games and games that marked the reopening of the park.

A concert by the Philharmonic Band of Faro and a performance by Urban Xpression, a figure skating demonstration by Real Amizade Farense and a skate show, presented by WallRide, were some of the highlights of the program.

And, of course, there was no shortage of the garden's usual residents: the peacocks.

For Idália, an inhabitant of Faro, the garden has always been the second home.

“I used to go to the garden all the time. It is important, because it is the only green space that we have here in the city. It's a children's space, my kids were practically raised here. Now it has a more open and accessible space, as it used to be a stone floor and now they have improved for the passage of children and the elderly», said the visitor.

Patrícia, a visitor from Loulé, also used to frequent the garden at events and the space ended up being marked in her memories. Now it has become «nicer and much greener».

In his official speech, Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro, pointed out that «40 trees that were on the verge of dying were fixed and 64 new trees were planted».

This allowed the space to be «with more light, wider, more pleasant and with better conditions to receive people on the day of reopening, and to create more memories in the near future».

The mayor also insisted on stressing that the intervention “is not yet finished”.

«We have a maintenance plan for the space itself and the trees. We will continue to take care of our Alameda. Therefore, we will not allow large parties as we used to do, as it contributed to the degradation of this space. Let's just have animation here for people to enjoy”, he said.
