Playing, children celebrated water and the importance of saving it

Festival of the “Águas Sem Fronteiras” tournament, by Águas do Algarve, took place this Wednesday in Quarteira

Music, capoeira and playful games animated the morning of dozens of children from the winning groups of the “Water Without Borders” tournament, whose main objective was to alert the youngest to the importance of water and its preservation.

The big party took place this Wednesday, June 8th, World Oceans Day, at Praia da Gaivota, in Quarteira, where students and teachers from the six winning classes of the competition organized by Águas do Algarve joined: team “Os Criativos” from the 5th year of the São Vicente Basic School, Vila do Bispo; “100Água” team from the 9th year of the Basic School of Castro Marim; “As Gotas” team of the 2nd/3rd year of Escola Básica JI 1st Cycle D. Francisca de Aragão, Loulé; “Os Pocinhas” team from the 4th year of Escola Básica nº 4 de Olhão; “7ºG Tecno” team of the 7th year of Escola Básica Tecnopolis, Lagos; and SL-3B of the EB1 of São Luís, Faro.

From the 1st to the 3rd cycle, all Algarve students were invited to create an advertising piece that would alert the community to issues associated with the efficient use of water, with almost two hundred works having been delivered.

Of these 200, the team «Os Pocinhas» from the 4th grade of Escola Básica n. from the Escola Básica Tecnopolis de Lagos, from the 4th to 1th grade groups.

“The most important thing about this initiative was that they learned measures to save water and how important water is on our planet. In the midst of playing and working, they managed to better assimilate this content and were very happy to have won", said teacher Leonor, from Escola Básica n.º 4 of the Municipality of Olhão, to the Sul Informação.

«School is not just paper and pen, these initiatives are very important and they also learn through play», stressed the teacher.

In the opinion of Isabel Soares, vice president of the Board of Directors of Águas do Algarve, «it is extremely important to start with the youngest», given that «environmental education has to be taken to everyone».

In this sense, Isabel Soares explains that Águas do Algarve has done a job of putting into practice several activities, for different ages, that alert to the theme.

«Today, these children had the opportunity to come here, to be close to nature and the beach. There is nothing better than celebrating Oceans Day by alerting them to climate change, which, for us, is a very big concern», continues Isabel Soares, stressing that both municipalities and companies have «the responsibility and obligation to make them aware for these problems'.

Carlos Carmo, councilor of the Municipality of Loulé, stressed that it is “with great pleasure” that the municipality receives this initiative.

«Here are all the ingredients gathered for this project to fulfill its objectives – raising awareness of the importance of efficient water use, but also for students to understand how valuable this asset is that we no longer value without even realizing it».

The mayor also took the opportunity to recall the drought that this year affects the country and the Algarve so much, as a result of climate change.

«All the entities that compete for this objective must have a very concentrated action of senility here for the entire population, but, in my personal opinion, this action is even more important in schools because it is here that we can change what is the paradigm in this matter", concluded Carlos Carmo.

Between 10:00 am and 13:00 pm, children from these schools were invited to enjoy a morning with many activities that, once again, raised awareness of environmental issues.

Luna, a 7th grade student at Escola Básica Tecnopolis de Lagos, told the Sul Informação who considers it very important that people understand how to save water. “Water is running out and it is difficult to have clean water, so it is very important that people care more about water”.

The event organized by Águas do Algarve, with the support of the Parish Council of Quarteira and the Câmara de Loulé, brought together around 150 students.

«This is the culmination of the first phase of the project, as we will have many more actions taking place until the end of the year. We are very pleased with the participation of the schools and it is a great joy to have so many people here, on this day, celebrating the sea, the environment, nature and water», concluded Teresa Fernandes, responsible for communication at Águas do Algarve.
