Castro Marim celebrates Popular Saints with balls and arraiais

The Mast Contest culminates in Praça 1º de Maio, with the Arraial de S. João, on the night of the 23rd of June

They start today, June 10th, and only end on July 9th. Castro Marim is partying with balls and fairs all over the county to celebrate the Popular Saints. 

Flower garlands, balloons, lanterns made of colored paper, rosemary, basil, fado, marches and popular music.

«These are unavoidable milestones of this tradition, which result from the work and dedication of the various local associations in the municipality, which even during the pandemic were committed and committed to this dynamic, contributing to the initiative “Tradição sobre Rodas – Santos em Casa”, carried out by municipality in an attempt not to abandon the Mast Contest», recalls the City Council, in a press release.

The municipality recommends the use of a mask at events, even if outdoors, “whenever there is a large crowd of people”.

The Mast Contest culminates in Praça 1º de Maio, with the Arraial de S. João, on the night of the 23rd of June. The jury will make known its decision on the work of the collectivities, in which the traditional aspects, originality and imagination in the courts alluding to the Popular Saints are evaluated.

The XX Mastros Contest is organized by the Municipality of Castro Marim and counts on the collaboration of local associations and clubs: Cultural Association “Amendoeiras em Flor”, Social Association of the Parish of Odeleite, ARCDAA – Associação Recreativa, Cultural e Desportiva dos Amigos de Alta Mora, Campesino Recreativo Futebol Clube, Casa do Povo do Azinhal, Clube de Junqueira, Grupo Desportivo e Cultural do Rio Seco, Associação Recreativo e Cultural do Azinhal, Castromarinense Musical Band, Irmandade do Imaculado Coração de Maria.
