Festa da Espiga de Salir returns in a big way with several activities

Program runs for three days

The Festa da Espiga, which takes place on Ascension Thursday, May 26, is back in a big way in Salir, in the interior of the municipality of Loulé, after two years in which it took place in an adapted format due to the pandemic.

On the morning of the 26th, activities begin with a mountain bike ride and a “Trilhos da Espiga” walking tour. At 13:00 pm, the small taverns with delicacies and mountain snacks open, as well as the exhibition of regional products.

However, the most awaited moment of the festival is scheduled for 16:00, with the ethnographic parade where the cars representing the different localities and their main agricultural and craft activities are the focus of attention of the visitors.

Bread making, arbutus and distillation, beekeeping and cork extraction, fig, almond and carob retail, linen, wool, palm and esparto crafts are some of the activities that will be recreated here.

At the same time, by the voice of popular poets, poems made on the spot are recited, with messages addressed to municipal officials, as a request for certain interventions in the parish. «A tradition that, year after year, is the hallmark of this festival», says the municipality of Loulé.

The night of “Quinta-Feira da Espiga” will feature a dance, followed by a concert by the charismatic popular singer Quim Barreiros, starting at 23 pm.

The party continues on Friday with an afternoon dedicated to seniors who, in a joint action with social solidarity institutions and homes, have a moment of conviviality here. The night is dedicated to young people with three concerts: MGDRV (22:00), HMB (23:30) and Christian F (01:00).

On Saturday, the last day of the program, children are invited to participate in the “Festa das Espiguinhas”.

On this day, the ethnographic parade takes place again, starting at 19:30 pm, for those who did not have the opportunity to attend on Thursday.

Three musical moments are planned for the closing, with concerts by the group De Moda em Moda (22:00 pm), Iris (23:30 pm) and DJ Rodriguez (1:00 am).

All shows of the Festa da Espiga are free of charge.

This event had its first edition on May 23, 1968, promoted by the then president of the Parish Council, José Viegas Gregório, one of the most emblematic figures in the region.
