CCDR/Algarve salutes Maria João Bebianno for the Medal of Scientific Merit

The delivery of the distinction took place yesterday at the Opening Session of the Ciência2022 Meeting

The Committee for Coordination and Regional Development (CCDR) of the Algarve welcomed Maria João Bebianno, retired professor at the University of Algarve (UAlg), for attributing this Monday, May 16, the Medal of Scientific Merit.

The director of the Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA) at the University of Algarve was distinguished with this award that recognizes individuals for their high professional qualities and for fulfilling their duty and contribution to scientific development in Portugal.

The award ceremony took place yesterday at the Opening Session of the Ciência2022 Meeting, which will take place until Wednesday, the 18th, at the Lisbon International Fair, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Science and Technology Foundation and the National Day of Scientists – anniversary of the birth of Professor Mariano Gago, a distinguished Algarvian who was full professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon and Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, from 1995 to 2002 and from 2005 to 2011.

Maria João Bebianno has a degree in Chemical Engineering – Branch of Chemistry and Processes (1974) from Instituto Superior Técnico. She holds a PhD in Marine Ecotoxicology from the University of Reading (United Kingdom) (1990) and obtained the title of Aggregate at the University of Algarve (1999).

She is a retired full professor at the University of Algarve, where she exercised pedagogical activity at the Faculty of Science and Technology, being responsible for several subjects in the field of Marine and Environmental Sciences at the Bachelor's and Master's level.

She was director of the Environmental Engineering Course and director of the Marine Sciences Course and of the Marine and Coastal Management course and of the Department of Earth, Sea and Environmental Sciences. Member of the General Council, he has held several university management positions, namely vice-president and president of the Board of Directors of the Aquatic Resources Science and Technology Unit, member of the Assembly of Representatives of the Aquatic Resources Science and Technology Unit and of the Faculty of Sciences of the Sea and the Environment, president of the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Marine and Environmental Sciences, member of the Statutory Assembly of the Faculty of Sciences and Technologies and member of the Senate and the University Assembly.

He worked at the National Institute for Fisheries Research (currently IPMA), where he was responsible for the Division of Technical-Scientific Cooperation (1980-1983), and scientific and technical functions at the Azores Underwater Acoustics Polygon (1974-1976). He was also a member of the National Commission Against Sea Pollution (1976-1983).

Internationally, he was part of the Portuguese delegation that negotiated the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of ​​the United Nations (1978-1981). He was a member of the Portuguese Delegation to the Oslo Convention and the Paris Convention (currently with the designation of OSPAR), and of Barcelona, ​​of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) (1976-1980) and of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Commission (IOC) (1976-1983, 1996-2008). Since 2016, he has been a member of the UN group of experts that assesses the state of the marine environment (Group of Experts of the Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment including Socio Economic Aspects).

He develops research at the Centro de Ciências do Mar e Ambiente (CIMA), where he is responsible for several research projects funded nationally and by the European Union in the area of ​​Marine Ecotoxicology, which he pioneered in Portugal, with special emphasis on the study of the impact. of organic and inorganic pollutants and their effects on environmental contamination species and by the application of proteomic analysis to the effect of environmental contaminants on biological systems.

He has supervised seven postdoctoral fellows and doctoral students (17 completed and 2 in progress, one of which in co-supervision). She is the author of several publications in Scientific Journals with referee (182) (h-37) and editor of several books and book chapters.

He is a member of several national and foreign scientific and professional societies (Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa, Sociedade Portuguesa de Química, Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, SETAC, SECOTOX, SICTA). Between 2015 and 2019, he was president of the Portuguese Association of Women Scientists (AMONET), where he had previously served as president of the General Assembly.
