Professor Maria João Bebianno (UAlg) receives Medal of Scientific Merit

The award was delivered by the Minister of Science and Technology and Higher Education Elvira Fortunato

Maria João Bebianno, professor at the University of Algarve (UAlg) and coordinator of the Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA), was distinguished, this Monday, May 16, with the Medal of Scientific Merit, in the opening session of the Science 2022 Meeting, which took place at the Lisbon Congress Centre.

The award was presented by the Minister of Science and Technology and Higher Education, Elvira Fortunato, on the day that celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Science and Technology Foundation, the National Day of Scientists and the birthday of the Algarve professor Mariano Gago.

The scientific merit medals are intended to reward national or foreign individuals who, due to their high professional qualities and the fulfillment of their duty, have distinguished themselves for a valuable and exceptional contribution to the development of science or scientific culture in Portugal.

The UAlg researcher, with a vast curriculum, was highlighted for the importance of her research. Maria João Bebianno has a degree in Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico and a PhD in Marine Ecotoxicology from the University of Reading (United Kingdom) and in Oceanography from the University of Algarve. She is a member of the Expert Group on the Regular Process for the Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socio-Economic Aspects of the United Nations.

She was president of the Association of Women Scientists AMONET (2008-2011).

Ciência 2022 is the annual meeting of the scientific and technological community in Portugal, which is taking place until this Wednesday, May 18th. Building the future with science is this year's motto, curated by Teresa Pinto Correia (Associated Laboratory Change and University of Évora) and Teresa Ferreira (Associated Laboratory TERRA and Instituto Superior de Agronomia). Egypt is the guest country.
