Food Bank campaign collected 114 tons in the Algarve

The most raised foods were rice, pasta and milk

The Food Bank's campaign against Hunger, which took place this weekend, 28 and 29 May, collected 114 tonnes in the Algarve. Despite «some constraints» in the organization, the balance «is positive».

Ao Sul Informação, Nuno Cabrita Alves, president of the Food Bank against Hunger in the Algarve, said that, despite the general increase in prices, donations continued to be high.

The most popular foods were rice, pasta and milk. Continente, Lidl and Pingo Doce were the supermarket chains where the most products were collected.

Around 2100 volunteers participated in this campaign, who visited more than 140 supermarkets throughout the Algarve.

According to Nuno Cabrita Alves, there were «some constraints» when it comes to volunteers, both «in the store and in the warehouse», but the distribution of food «will start today».

Currently, the Food Bank against Hunger in the Algarve is supporting around 19 people from 129 institutions.

«The number of people helped has already dropped, happily, far from the numbers of the peak of the pandemic and unemployment, in which there were about 26 thousand», summarized Nuno Cabrita Alves.

Nationally, 1.695 tons of food were collected in this weekend's in-store campaign.

Until the 5th of June, the voucher campaigns (in supermarkets) and online (clicking on the site Feed this idea), thus reinforcing support for the poor in the Algarve.
