Algarve barman will represent Portugal at the World Cocktail Championship

Competition takes place in Cuba next November

After winning the National Cocktails Contest, in the Classic modality, Algarve's Renato Pires will represent Portugal in the World Cocktails Championship, which takes place in Cuba, in November. 

«Being the person who will represent Portugal abroad is an added responsibility», proudly reveals Renato Pires, in an interview with Sul Informação. The Algarve native, who became a member of the Barmen Algarve Association in 1997, when he was still a student at the Algarve Hotel and Tourism School, is preparing to represent Portugal in the World Cup for the third time.

«In 2002, I won the National and went to represent Portugal in Slovenia and, in 2004, I won again and went to Las Vegas», he says.

In this year's national competition, Renato Pires won with a liqueur of his own made with some obligatory drinks, such as the Beirão liqueur. To the Sul Informação, reveals that the revenue should be maintained until the World Cup.

According to Associação Barmen Algarve, the National Cocktails Contest was attended by 32 finalist bartenders, representing the Barmen Associations of Estoril, Algarve and Madeira. First place in the contest was awarded to Renato Pires (AB Algarve), second to Eusébio Silva (AB Madeira) and third to Filipe Sustelo (AB Algarve).

 

 

The national competition took place between the 1st and 3rd of April, in Albufeira, and the organizing committee was received at the Town Hall on the first day of the meeting.

As Cristiano Cabrita, vice-president of the Municipality of Albufeira, said at the time, this is, par excellence, the «great event for all bartenders» and «an extremely important initiative for Albufeira, for tourism in the Municipality, and also a way of promoting this professional activity'.

The contest was attended by Giorgio Fada, president of the International Barmen Association, Joaquim Lopes, president of the Portuguese Barmen Association, João Encarnação, president of the Algarve Barmen Association, and Rafael Ramos, president of the ABA Assembly, all representatives of the Organizing Committee of this year's National Cocktails Contest and with councilors Cláudia Guedelha and Ricardo Clemente.
