Miguel Martinho, current national Formula Windsurf champion, won the European Championship that took place until this Saturday, April 16, at Centro Náutico de Reguengos de Monsaraz.
«The wind, which insisted on not showing up, allowed only two races to be held, an insufficient number to validate the championship internationally», explains the organization.
Thus, Miguel Martinho, although he won the competition in Reguengos de Monsaraz, did not become champion of Europe.
«The championship was scheduled well in advance and ended up happening on a windless week in Alqueva. The award of the European title is postponed until the next edition of the European Championship», explained Vasco Chaveca, from the Portuguese Formula Windsurfing Association.
Fernando Martinez and Juan Vieto, both Spaniards, took second and third place, respectively.
The European Championship was the first of a series of events included in the Formula Windsurf Series Portugal 2022, which includes six sporting events.
«We started with the European one here in Monsaraz. Then we go to Viana do Castelo for the first stage of the National Championship, we go down to the Algarve where we will be in Lagoa and Lagos, for the Continental Cup and another stage of the national. In July we will be in Cascais and we will finish in September, in Ponta Delgada, in the Azores», explained Orlanda Matias, responsible for organizing the Formula Windsurf Series Portugal 2022.
The European Formula Windsurf Championship was supported by the Municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz and was organized by the Formula Windsurfing Association of Portugal and by New Sport Events, under the aegis of the Portuguese Sailing Federation and the International Windsurfing Association.
