Portimão celebrates Easter with Holy Week traditions

Portimão is getting ready to enter Holy Week with several celebrations that mark the liturgical program for the next few days, towards Easter Sunday. The celebrations are back after two years of interregnum due to the pandemic and take place from 10 to 17 April. 

The ceremonies that evoke the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus begin on Palm Sunday, April 10th, with the blessing and Eucharist that mark the date, with processions starting from the Mother Church of Portimão, from the Church of Amparo and the Matrix of Alvor.

On Holy Thursday, 14 April, the celebration of the Mass of the Lord's Supper and the rite of foot washing, which take place at 19:00 in the Main Church of Portimão and in the Church of Amparo and in the Main Church of Alvor , at 19:30 pm at the Matriz da Mexilhoeira Grande and at 21:00 pm at the Vicariate of Pedra Mourinha, in Portimão.

On Good Friday, April 15th, the highlight will be the traditional Procession of the Enterro do Senhor, which from 21:00 pm will take the image of the Dead Lord to the streets of the city center of Portimão, to the sound of rattles, in an atmosphere of retreat. Alvor will also be the stage for this moment, starting at 22:00, while in Mexilhoeira Grande and Quinta do Amparo the sacred roads are scheduled for 17:00.

In Portimão, the procession's route will start at Igreja do Colégio and will go through Bispo D. Fernando Coutinho, 5 de Outubro and Serpa Pinto streets, passing through Jardim 1º de Dezembro, heading to Direita and Mouzinho de Albuquerque streets, before Avenida S. João de Deus, back to Praça da República and Igreja do Colégio.

Holy Saturday, April 16, will be, according to Portimão City Council, the epicenter of Holy Week celebrations with the Easter Vigil, which marks the resurrection of the Lord and which will be celebrated in the various parishes of the municipality, with the following schedule: 21:30 – Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in Portimão; 21:30 – Mexilhoeira Grande; 22:00 – Divino Salvador, in Alvor; 23:00 – Nossa Senhora do Amparo, also in Portimão.

The festivities culminate on Easter Sunday, at 10:00 am, with the Eucharist of the Easter of the Lord in the Main Church of Portimão, followed by the Procession of the Resurrection of Jesus that will walk through the main streets of the city center, with the faithful being invited to participate in this manifestation. religious, either carrying flower torches or decorating their windows and balconies with bedspreads. The Eucharist will be held at 18:00.

Also in Portimão, Easter Mass will be celebrated in the Church of Nossa Senhora do Amparo at 9:00 am and 10:30 am, as well as in the Vicariate of Pedra Mourinha at 11:00 am. In Alvor, the Procession of the Resurrection of Jesus will take to the streets at 9 am, followed by the Mass of the Day, which will also take place in the church of Penina at 00 pm and in Montes de Alvor at 12 pm.

In addition to the liturgical celebrations, there is an entertainment program that the Municipality has prepared for the period between the 9th and 17th of April under the motto “Long live Easter Portimão 2022”, consisting of the recreation of several attraction centers inspired by this festive season, «conciliating the tradition with the joy of celebration in a family atmosphere».
