Tavira: Pedra d'el Rei and Pedras da Rainha villages set up nest boxes for birds

Project results from a collaboration with the Vila Nativa Association

The villages of Pedras d'el Rei and Pedras da Rainha, in Tavira, recently established a protocol with the Associação Vita Nativa, for the implementation of a project of local accommodation for birds, inserting several nest boxes in order to promote the diversity of the avifauna. in the region.

According to the villages, 28 nest boxes are already installed in Pedras da Rainha and 26 in Pedras d'el Rei, having already allowed «the establishment of populations of species such as titmice, hoopoe and Galician owls».

This partnership aims to «capture the interest and provide a more direct contact of those who visit the villages with the birds, thus promoting nature tourism», as well as «encouraging the establishment of more birds in the urban environment and promoting and enhancing the important role of species in controlling biological pests'.

Local accommodation for birds is a project that won the 2018 Portugal Participatory Budget and is the result of a collaboration between the Vita Nativa Association and the Algarve Regional Directorate of the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests.

Almeida Pires, General Director of Pedras da Rainha, says that «environmental preservation and the defense of the avifauna existing in our projects are a constant concern, so joining this challenge immediately deserved our acceptance».

«Increasingly, nature tourism is a commitment of Grupo Pedras, so we will continue to embrace initiatives like this one. We want to be increasingly active in conserving the environment and defending ecosystems», highlights the general director.

The villages of Pedras d'el Rei and Pedras da Rainha, together with the Associação Vita Nativa, intend with this project «to bring people closer to the biodiversity around them and make the urban spaces of the Algarve more prepared for birds, contributing to the development and dissemination of scientific knowledge».
