“Antigone” is one of the next “Theatre Scenes” in Faro

Shows will take place on the 18th, 19th and 20th of February, at the Antiga Fábrica da Cerveja, in Faro

Chorus, “Antigone”

O artistic project “Theatre Scenes” now brings to the scene the tragedy of “Antígona”, with dramaturgy and staging by Neusa Dias, to take place on the 18th and 19th of February, at 21:30 pm, and on the 20th, at 17:00 pm, at the Antiga Fábrica da Cerveja, in Faro.

Based on the classic text by Sophocles, and on the modern “Antigones” by Bertolt Brecht, Jean Anouilh and António Pedro, we now witness «the last moment in Antigone's life before she was walled up alive in a cave, for having disobeyed the orders of the king (Creon)», says the organization of “Cenas de Teatro”.

«For her it is inconceivable to deny funeral ceremonies to one of her brothers, Polynices, considered a traitor and enemy of the city, while her other brother, Eteocles, considered to be propitious to the city, is granted an honorable burial, after the two brothers perish at the hands of one of them. from the other. For transgressing Creon's edict, Antigone will die."

In this show “not all the characters of the tragedy that Sophocles created, nor the Chorus is formed by old men”. In this adaptation, there are only five characters that tell the story and, contrary to what happened in Ancient Greece, «all are interpreted by women, without any transfiguration of gender towards male characters».

The cast includes artists Marta Gorgulho and Neusa Dias and ten interns from the Professional Course for Interpreter/Actor/Actress at the Tomás Cabreira Secondary School, in Faro.

Tickets for the shows will cost six euros and can be purchased on the day and place of performance or reserved/purchased in advance via email [email protected].

Before the premiere of the show, on the 10th, 11th and 12th of February, also at the Antiga Fábrica da Cerveja, reading sessions are held, with the public reading aloud the text by Sophocles.

These reading initiatives are free to participate, and interested parties must register via e-mail. [email protected].

Without any pretension of performing, the participants «are invited to experience the so-called 'table work' that theater artists often go through in the creation of a show», highlights the organization.

The reading is guided by the artistic team and aims to «disclose in a lively way the text and its author, but also help the reader/spectator to understand the dramatic situation proposed by the theatrical text, freeing him from this need at the moment when who attends the performance, thus perhaps enabling the spectator to pay better attention to the signs and meanings present in the theatrical spectacle».

“Cenas de Teatro” is an independent artistic project, consisting of five shows, to which five theatrical readings are associated.

to happen in Faro until July, this initiative will take place in different cultural spaces in the city, namely Associação 289, Antiga Fábrica da Cerveja, CAPa – Centro de Artes Performativas do Algarve, Municipal Library of Faro, Club Farense.
