Faro leads a European network – the European Creative Rooftop Network – which wants to create “creative solutions to social, economic and environmental challenges” for roof terraces (rooftops) of cities.

Besides Faro, which has even organized a festival on its rooftops, this network also includes Amsterdam, Antwerp, Barcelona, Belfast, Chemnitz, Gothenburg, Nicosia and Rotterdam.

On December 1, the partner organizations met in Antwerp on the top of the MAS building, a rooftop accessible to the public.

The nine partner cities differ in terms of culture, climate and urban planning, but seek to find their similarities within the “European rooftop cityscape” and exchange knowledge about this shared heritage.

“In several areas of Europe, thousands of square kilometers of space with enormous potential are underutilized and not recognized as an effective urban resource. This insight brings together organizations from nine different cities in a collective effort to unlock the potential of rooftops Europeans', says the Chamber of Faro.

The thematic approach that the municipality wants to have for its roof terrace policies is «inspired by the way they allow us to see the city from another perspective and the power to reimagine them in multiple ways, leading to three different areas of development: arts, community and sustainability”, he adds.

The main objective is that the roof terraces of Faro become new public spaces: green and sustainable meeting places where communities can thrive.

«ECRN provides the necessary international inspiration to carry out the projects that Faro wishes, and, on the other hand, allows the sharing of local knowledge of the Municipality with European counterparts», says the Chamber.

This network is financed by the Creative Europe program until 2024.
