In the Backpack, there are cases, books, «more metaphorical belongings» and, now, also a theater festival, which, from this Thursday, November 4th, wants to delight children and young people, in Faro.

The idea of creating this new initiative in the Algarve capital came from LAMA - a company based in Faro and that has been asserted.

João de Brito, founder, explains to Sul Informação as, in addition to artistic creation, one of LAMA's missions is “to have a program for people”.

Thus, the Mochila – Theater Festival for Children and Young People was born, which, from November 4th to 14th, will have 11 shows, spread across five cultural spaces of Faro and even outdoors.

«We have a work with children and young people, which we want to continue and, hence, this evolution into a festival», says João de Brito, who is also the artistic director of Mochila, a name that stays in your ear.

“The backpack, in addition to being more associated with young people and children, is a very transversal object and serves so many things: it holds so many important belongings, some more metaphorical, others more physical,” he adds, between laughs.

The initiative will kick off this Thursday, the 4th, at 19 pm, at Teatro das Figuras, with the show “Romeu & Julieta”, a creation of Teatro Praga, based on Shakespeare's classic, where Cláudia Jardim and Diogo Bento guide the spectators by the story of a damned love, mixing it with the confection… of a cheesecake, In real time.

Also at Teatro das Figuras, but on November 10th, at 19 pm, it will be possible to watch “Parliament Shakespeare”, by the Bestiário company, a show where a parliament, in convulsion, discusses with heart whether an innocent lie also hurts.

On the 6th and 7th of November, at 11:00 am, the Municipal Museum of Faro receives “A Grande Viagem do Pequeno Mi”, a show by Madalena Victorino, in co-creation with Ana Raquel and Beatriz Marques Dias, about the power of imagination, inspired by the book by Sandro William Junqueira, and which has also been on display at “Lavrar o Sea".

In the space LAMA Black Box, on November 5th, at 19 pm, “Escuridão Bonita”, by Umcoletivo, a creation by Cátia Terrinca and João P. Nunes, based on a story by Ondjaki, and “Romeu e Romeu”, will be presented on November 00th, at 14 pm ”, play by LAMA Teatro that closes the Festival, on November 17th, at 00 pm.

The Mochila also has a particularity: it brings together a youth theater group (Estojo – LAMA Teatro Pedagogical Laboratory) with reputable and professional companies.

«This is a mixture that we were looking for», confesses João de Brito, with three ESTOJO shows being planned: Loop (Readers' Group), Spin & Shot (Panapaná) and Memórias de Bambaram (Improviso de Intervenção Theatre).

All these initiatives will be presented at the PDJ Institute Auditorium, in Faro.

In addition to the shows, the festival will also tour the streets of Faro, with the performance Backpack Gang, coordinated by João de Brito, Sara Martins and Marta Gorgulho. On the 4th, 5th, 11th, 12th and 13th of November, this gang, made up of young interpreters, occupies the historic center of the city, downtown, the riverside area and the municipal schools.

For João de Brito, this festival represents “a milestone in LAMA's life”.

“We've always been concerned with audiences, with that idea of stimulating thought, but we also go beyond that. Sometimes, seeing a show changes your life radically. We want to change habits of enjoyment, for children and young people to come to the theater more often, and also, who knows, with that there will be more creators so that there will be more artists», he concludes.
