Minister of Agriculture presents National Plan for Balanced and Sustainable Food in Tavira

Maria do Céu Antunes will also visit a farm in Tavira and Viveiros Monterosa, in Olhão

The minister of Agriculture, Maria do Céu Antunes, will travel this Wednesday, November 24th, to Tavira, to the aapresentation of the National Plan for Balanced and Sustainable Food, at the Agricultural Experimentation Center. will still be homologated three protocols, as well as a visit to the farm in Tavira Agrívabe and the Monterosa nurseries, in Moncarapacho (Olhão).

Maria do Céu Antunes's visit begins in Tavira, at 10:00 am, in the Main Hall of the Town Hall, with the presentation and approval ceremony of the “Horta Urbana” and “Semente” projects.

The “Horta Urbana” project will be presented by the president of the Chamber Ana Paula Martins, followed by an explanation of the “Semente” project by the president of Associação In Loco, Artur Gregório. This will follow the ratification, by Minister Maria do Céu Antunes, of the protocol signed between the Municipality of Tavira and the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries (DRAP) of the Algarve.

The protocol aims at «the development and implementation of an urban vegetable garden, whose purpose is the production and consumption of agricultural goods by the population of Tavira», emphasizes the municipality.

To achieve this objective, "a parcel of land was made available" at the Tavira Agricultural Experimentation Center (CEAT), with DRAP Algarve being responsible for "advising, in particular, with regard to the application of good agricultural practices, recommendation of suitable crops, verification of proper use and presentation of the space, as well as the supply of water for irrigation of crops».

The municipality of Tavira is responsible for running the Urban Garden, in accordance with organic farming practices, taking on the work of sealing, preparation, regular maintenance and improvement of the area in question, creating autonomous access to the plot, installing the irrigation system, ensuring coordinating and controlling the operation and management of the vegetable garden, ensuring the supervision and security of the site so as not to interfere with the work being carried out by DRAP Algarve, as well as composting all waste.

The creation of this vegetable garden will be implemented within the scope of the “Semente” project, by Associação In Loco, which has the support of several partner entities, namely the Tavirense autarchy.

This project aims to «foster adequate nutrition, sow seeds to strengthen production/consumption capacity in the districts of Atalaia, José Joaquim Jara, Horta do Carmo, Porta Nova and Bela Fria, as well as disseminate the principles of the Mediterranean Diet », highlights the Chamber of Tavira.

After the session, the protocols signing ceremony for the “Tavira Innovation Hub” project will take place at 11:00 am, at the Agricultural Experimentation Centre.

The project, presented under the Recovery and Resilience Program (PRR), “will mobilize and integrate stakeholders with responsibility for stimulating, implementing and carrying out research, innovation, training, demonstration and transfer of knowledge and technology, significantly strengthening the agricultural and agri-food research and innovation ecosystem», refers to DRAP Algarve.

A competition will also be launched for ideas for the creation of the logo for the Innovation Poles of Tavira and Faro, to the Communication Design course at the University of Algarve (taking into account its representation as a partner in this project).

At the session, the National Plan for Balanced Food will also be presented by the Minister of Agriculture, and a display of regional products from the Mediterranean Diet will take place in the atrium of the Tavira Agrarian Experimentation Centre.

In the afternoon, Maria do Céu Antunes will also visit two farms, the company Agrivabe, in Tavira, at 15 pm, and Viveiros Monterosa, in Moncarapacho (Olhão), at 00 pm.
