Lagos launches free dog and cat sterilization campaign

Priority will be given to pets from disadvantaged families

The Câmara de Lagos will carry out a new free sterilization campaign for dogs and cats, preferably aimed at disadvantaged families. Interested parties will be able to apply from Monday, 22 November, until the same day in December. The surgeries will be carried out until March 31, upon prior registration and appointment.

The initiative, approved yesterday by the City Council, is intended "for dogs and cats over 6 months old, whose owners are residents in the municipality of Lagos, and is limited to two animals per household and the number of spaces available."

Despite having as preferential recipients households “in an unfavorable socio-economic situation, who otherwise would not have the financial means to support the cost of sterilizing their pets, this campaign has a broader scope, admitting registrations without this requirement”.

The initiative will take into account the «respect and safeguarding of animal welfare» and aims to «control the population of stray animals, being carried out by the municipality with the collaboration of the services of the direct administration of the State».

As Ana Tidy, Municipal Veterinary Doctor explains, “sterilization/neutering is one of the ways to prevent animals (especially puppies) from being abandoned daily on the streets. But, in addition to avoiding unwanted litters, it is also a matter of health, since neutering the animal reduces the risk of health problems, prolongs its life and provides it with more quality».

The costs of this campaign will be borne by the local authority, which allocated a sum of five thousand euros.

Interested parties must submit their application, using the appropriate form, to the Municipal Office of the Municipality of Lagos, at the Official Animal Collection Center of Lagos (aka “Canil/Gatil Municipal”) and by email to expediente.geral @cm-lagos.pt accompanied by the documents contained in the rules and in the disclosure leaflet.
