Desertification and those trying to fight it are at the center of the debate in Alcoutim

Exemplary projects from the Algarve, but also from other parts of the country, and what has been the work of the Center for Competences in the Fight Against Desertification (CCDesert), based in Alcoutim, will be in focus at the conference “Desertification of the Interior – past, present and future”, which will take place tomorrow and Saturday, the 26th and 27th of November, in this municipality in the Northeast of Algarve.

In addition to the debate, scheduled for Friday, 26th, at Espaço Guadiana, CCDesert, which organizes the conference, will also promote the technical visit “Natural beauty vs. desertification”, on Saturday, where he will make known “the territory and the people of Alcoutim”, in addition to offering participants a tasting of local products.

On the first day of the conference, work begins at 9:30 am, with the opening session, which will include the host Osvaldo Gonçalves, who is at the same time president of the Alcoutim Chamber and of the direction of CCDesert, and with Isabel Ferreira, secretary of State of the Appreciation of the Interior.

At 10:30 am, the first roundtable of the day begins, dedicated to the theme “Desertification: What? Why? Like? When? Where?" and which will be moderated by Miguel Pisoeiro de Freitas, from the University of Algarve.

The guests for this panel are Maria José Roxo, professor at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and Vanessa Quico, department director at the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF).

At 14 pm, and already after lunch, the works will continue with the round table “Forms of struggle in a deserted interior – pros and cons”, which will be moderated Elisabete Rodrigues, director of Sul Informação.

This session will cover five approaches to the territory. Opening, Nuno Serra, chairman of the Board of Food for Sustainability – CoLAB, from Idanha-a-Nova, will talk about the “Contribution of territorial marketing in the fight against depopulation”.

Then, it will be the turn of João Ministro, member of the Qrer Cooperative, to make the presentation “Querença – Can the Academy's commitment counteract the abandonment of the territory?”.

From Mação, the vice-president of the Câmara António Louro will come, with the presentation “Experienced in the mobilization of agricultural and forestry producers”, while from Vimioso will come Miguel Nóvoa, member of the board of AEPGA, to talk about agents of rural development together in the dynamization of the territory.

The session ends with the presentation “Alcoutim – Center of competences that unites to reinforce the fight against desertification”, by Alice Teixeira, CCDesert's superior technician.
